How to Get Hostile Punks Off the Bus
Editor,
Milwaukee has one of the best transit systems in the country. But bus ridership here continues to fall. Why? Could it possibly be the conduct of many of the riders?
Here’s an ad the system should run: “WANTED, professional, classy, respectful passengers. Preferably black/white men and women. Purpose: to be a role model in speech and deportment, to set an example in behavior and actions.”
We’ve let the rowdies and thugs take over. Even the drivers are mute or indifferent when it comes to unruly behavior. Can’t anyone control the hostile punks? (Females included).
Here’s a scenario: That one day per week, at least, all citizens ride a bus. That includes editorial writers, the media, educators, politicians, the clergy, assorted movers and shakers, business and civic leaders, city and county employees, the judiciary, law enforcers, et al. In short, anyone who loudly claims to care. Believe me, it would really make a difference. Oh, and let’s not forget the affluent and wealthy.
Try it for six months. I guarantee it would make a dramatic difference with the city overall, especially the bus culture. Remember, mass transit brings people together, (that’s what we all want, right?). It actually integrates and acts as a social leveler. Something everyone can participate in.
Or, see our transit system completely disintegrate and vanish.
