Moveable Type

Version 2.661 (Commercial License)

Movable Type is a decentralized web-based personal publishing system designed to ease maintenance of regularly-updated content. This content can consist of, but is not limited to, entries in a weblog or online journal, photographs in an online photo gallery, news headlines on a newspaper site, or articles in an online magazine. Developed by the husband/wife team of Benjamin Trott and Mena G. Trott, Movable Type is a testament of the power of independent software.

The Riverwest Currents is a no-frills operation that survives on the generosity of those who support it with their time, money, talents and other forms of support. The organization functions with just a few paid employees. Many of us don't even have full-time day jobs. At present, writers, photographers, and illustrators graciously donate their time and skills. We hope to soon begin offering some form of compensation to those who dedicate themselves to this endeavor.

To continue to uphold our mission and the quality of our newspaper, we depend upon advertisers, monthly fundraising events, and even donations from those who support our cause. Yes, some people give financial support to the newspaper -- even though, as a small business, the Riverwest Currents is unable to offer a tax-deductible donation possiblity.

We are incredibly grateful to those who have supported us in this way. Along with those who throw a few extra dollars on subscription renewals (who we are also quite grateful for!), we would like to thank the following supporters who have contributed $100 or more to our cause.

--Sonya Jongsma Knauss, Editor

“…the quality of the Riverwest Currents is testimony to the accuracy of our expectations for Riverwest back in 1973. We thought Riverwest was destined to become one of the most significant examples of integrated city living in Wisconsin (which it now surely is).”

-- Jim Godsil, President, Community Roofing, Inc.

“Tanya's [View from Here] column was one of the best pieces of writing I've seen on the aftermath of the Charlie Young beating. I liked it because it showed great understanding, based on experience, of what needs to be done in neighborhoods for this kind of thing not to occur. I also liked it because it reminded me of what old-timers from the Polish neighborhood here used to tell me about their childhoods -- that you couldn't get away with anything because the neighbors would tell your mom.”

-- Tom Tolan, Milwaukee journalist and author of Riverwest: A Community History.

“It’s great that the Riverwest Currents is printing poetry by Riverwest folks--there are many fine poets living here and not that many publications that print poetry. Thanks for your work to make the Riverwest Currents happen. It enhances the quality of life here and is a hopeful and happy sign of our community spirit.”

-- Antler, Milwaukee’s Poet Laureate

“Thank God I love foreign movies! I picked up your paper at the Oriental Theatre… I have fallen in love with Riverwest because of the wonderful people and businesses… Your staff may be underpaid, you probably need better equipment, but you love what you’re doing… that’s why I love the Riverwest Currents.”

-- Ralph Bronner, Menomonee Falls, vice president of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps

“The January 2003 Riverwest Currents just arrived and I hungrily sat down to read it. Thanks to all for the good work of creating this wonderful paper. I have lived in Riverwest for 16 years--and I love it now more than ever. Keep up the good work!

-- Larraine McNamara-McGraw, former 3rd District Alderwoman
